Window Poem

Window Poem
Straight ahead I see homes, a yard of green, garages and homes. Bushes and trees, a little road.

To my left is a thing full of mailboxes, a huge hill and woods.

It’s empty, everyone is at work or school. No matter what, the birds are always always chirping.

Deer running across the yard.

And a rock sits all alone by itself in the corner of the yard.

Inspired by Hopper

Nighthawks
She sits in the empty coffee shop all alone. The smell of coffee wafts through the restaurant. Warm air circulates throughout the shop. It’s been a sleepless night, she should be in bed but instead here she is, staring out the window into the dark town. A chair screeches across the floor as someone pulls it out from under the table so they can sit. A ceramic cup is placed in front of her with piping hot coffee filled to the brim. She lifts her head and looks up; across from her is an older man who seems sad. “Penny for your thoughts?” He asks her with a smile. She smiles back and tells the man how she is dreading going to work in the morning, she might be getting fired. The man express his concern for her and says nice things. The two chat ideally until the girl asks him what he’s doing up at this hour. His happiness diminishes and he seems to droop. “My wife passed away.” The man tells the woman. She gets up from where she’s sitting and hugs this stranger. Then they are back sitting and chatting some more. Their quiet chatter of conversation is all that is heard in the diner. Before the two of them know it, the sun is in the morning sky. Two plates are put in front of them by a waitress that listened to them for five hours and felt like doing something nice for them. They graciously take the food and eat slowly before the girl remembers she needs to get to work. The man smiles at her and bids her good luck, she thanks him and makes plans to meet up again with this man later. It’s now four thirty in the afternoon, the man hasn’t left the building. The bell over the front door dings and in steps the girl. Both of their spirits are lifted when they see one another. They become good friends, neighbors, and keep up this routine over the years.

Writers as Readers

Writers as Readers
  1. When you read, what do you need to be comfortable?
When I read, I just need quiet. I can read anywhere as long as it’s quiet.

4. What is one of your best memories connected with reading? I don’t really have any memories connected with reading, I just remember sitting on my cousin’s couch, bundled in blanket, and reading a book.

5. Have you ever picked up a book and been excited to turn the page? And the next, and the next? What book? Why couldn’t you stop reading? Is there a book you had to trudge through to finish? There’s been a lot of books I’ve read and had been excited to turn the page. Some books that I haven’t been able to get through are the books you are required to read in and English class. I just find them so boring.

12. Do you think that someone who reads a lot might become a stronger writer? Do you think we pick up vocabulary, sentence structures, themes, etc. from the books we read that come out directly or indirectly in our own writing? I think someone who reads a lot might become a stronger writer. I think we pick it up from anything that we read. I also think it comes out both directly and indirectly in our writing.

13. Do you think you’d ever write a book someday? Do you know what it would be about? How would you want to be described on the “About the Author” on the front cover? Hopefully one day I hope to write a book. I’m not sure what it would be about, probably a love story. For the “About the Author” I would liked to be described as a long time writer who is finally being discovered and hopes to be successful in the writing world.

Dan in real Life Questions

Dan in real Life Questions
7. Can you know that in three days that you love someone? No. You can’t fall in love in three days. I use to like to think that it’s possible; but it isn’t. When someone falls in love that quickly you are either in love with their personality, or you’re desperate. To know you love somebody in three days is impossible. You need to know them more before you “Love” them.

10. Dan’s family is very involved in getting him to date again. How involved do you think family should be in your relationships? You involved in theirs? Honestly family shouldn’t be involved at all, but of course everyone will get into everyone’s relationships because they care what the other person in the relationship is doing and how they are treating you.

11. Where was your best hiding spot as a kid playing Hide and Seek? My best hiding spot was on the window ledge, behind the curtains in the dining room of my grandma’s house. I remember sitting there for what felt like forever and being so sure that I was going to be instantly found, but I wasn’t. My mom and grandma were running around the house, frantic and yelling my name as they tried to find me. Then as quietly as possible I slipped from my hiding spot and started laughing. They were SO happy they “found” me. After that incident we didn’t really play that game anymore.

17. Describe your perfect day. My perfect day would consist of a warm day at the beach, hanging out with my friends and having a blast. I’d be so happy and carefree. Then we would stay out late and drive around til 2am, not getting home and going to bed until like 2:30am. That would be my perfect day. I wouldn’t really care about anything else as long as I’m happy.

22. Dan tells the kids at the abandoned Shack O’ Shells that “life is full of disappointment.” Do you think that’s true? How do you deal with disappointment? Yes, I think that’s true. I’m not sure how to deal with it because it seems like I’m always disappointed, so I guess just continually  look forward to something and then when it doesn’t happen, move on until you’re hit with disappointment again. Or just don’t get your hopes up.
